Girls, How to Find the Best Boy Friend, Date a Good Man, Just Grab a Geek!
72Girls, have you reached that point in life where you feel that most men are jerks? The guys you meet socially, in night clubs or at work just don’t respect you. All too often they are after only one thing. Too many men are looking for a one night stand and any attempt by you to let the relationship develop at a slower pace persuades them to dump you.
So Why not Grab a Geek and Go Out with a Nerd?
Have you thought of fishing in a different pond? Why not seek out guys who don’t think like that. Men who know that there is more to life than beer, football and ‘getting laid’. So why not consider Dating a Geek or a Nerd? The guys who delight in Physics, Information Technology, comic books and Sci Fi.
These are the guys you avoided like the plague at school. The ones who joined the Chess Club, gathered together to race radio controlled cars and who always dressed up as a character from Star Trek or Star Wars at a fancy dress party.
So How do you Meet Nerds?
How do you locate them? Well, a good starting point is online dating sites. Geeks are always online and typically resort to web-based dating, once they realise that they have been single for far too long and their desire is no longer satisfied by fantasies about Princess Leia or Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider.
Alternatively try chatting up the staff of your local computer shop or Apple Store. If you are a student and desperate, then you could join a Geeky Society. What about the Astronomical Society or a computer club? (Tip: In the latter case don’t get it mixed up with astrology and better not to mention Uranus!
Why Bother with a Geek?
But, I hear you saying, why should I go to all this trouble? Well, here are a few benefits of a geek boyfriend:
- Geeks tend to be more honest and straight forward than ordinary guys
- They will probably think you are hot compared to the Geek girls they normally hang out with
- Nerds tend to be clever and have relatively good jobs
- Techie guys are great at fixing all your technical gadgets and sorting out computer and mobile phone problems
- Geeks are less likely to stray and hitch up with other girls – Your main competition for their affections will be their games console
- A geek friend is an opportunity to broaden your horizons and learn more about technology and science
- Developing your geek guy into a more normal human being is a work of charity. In other words it will give you a warm glow inside!
But What About the Snags?
- Geeks can be a little smelly and unwashed. Personal hygiene and grooming may be an issue
- They typically have poor, scruffy hair and tasteless clothes
- They don’t understand people and the way they think and, in particular, they don't get girls
- They are obsessive about a whole range of subjects including what you might consider childish movies and console games
- Your friends may mock you because you hang out with geeks and nerds
- Geeks can be clumsy and socially inept
- At some stage in the relationship they may well expect you to dress up as Princess Leia!
The Princess Leia Thing
You probably think the last item doesn't sound so bad. Well think again. The single image of Leia that every geek adolescent fixated on, when the movie Return of the Jedi was first screened, was the moment the Princess was captured by the grotesque Jabba the Hutt.
The unfortunate actress Carrie Fisher, who played Leia, as Jabba's slave, was forced to wear a brief metallic bikini with a long, heavy chain hanging from her neck.
My boyfriend finally came out and begged me to wear this degrading costume at a Sci Fi convention. I patiently explained to him that this costume undermines the dignity of women and reverses every step taken in the cause of women’s rights and feminism over the last 200 years.
Surprisingly, I did get as far as trying on the costume after a glass or two of wine. To cut a long story short, the chaffing of the metallic bra not to mention the thought of the public humiliation, made it a total No as far as I was concerned!
Give Geeks a Try
Anyway, in spite of the Leia thing, I’d strongly encourage you to give geeks a try. The trick is to be patient with them. Organise a visit for your new geek guy to your hair dresser for some serious styling. Take him clothes shopping and steer him away from cords, sweatshirts, hoodies and tee shirts. You can also swap interests.
I used to take my geek to the Tate Modern (Contemporary Art) or Covent Garden for the Opera. In return, I accompanied him to the London Science Museum and the Imperial War Museum. I also watched the whole boxed set of Firefly and most of Freeks and Geeks.

Making Friends with the Techie Crowd
If you date a geek you’ll have to get to know his mates (male and female). Mixing with geeky girls can be tricky. Try dressing down so you are less threatening. Reduce makeup and let your hair do its own thing. I know it sounds awful but these are the kind of sacrifices you need to make in order to infiltrate Geekville.
Why not slip into a pair of innocuous jeans and a tee shirt. Make sure the jeans are well cut and figure hugging (you need to keep some standards) and the tee shirt is better plain. Avoid over doing it with a picture of an At At or the image of Darth Vader across your chest.
You can also consider ditching your contacts and wear a pair of glasses to blend in better. You’ll quickly find that Geek girls often don’t appreciate girly small talk and may consider you thick because you don’t know what Fermat’s Last Theorem is (don’t ask me. I haven’t a clue!).
If you feel totally inadequate then read up on a few Geek topics. Find out about Steve Jobs (The Apple Guy) and watch the movie, The Social Network (the Facebook Guy). Find out about Professor Brian Cox, a young British Astrophysicist and former rock star who has single handedly halted the decline in the number of students studying physics in British universities.
To gain acceptance in your new circle, You can always work on your new geek girl friends and help them with a makeover.
Beware! Geek Girl Upgrades can Backfire
But, beware that Geek makeovers can lead to disaster. Jane, a friend of mine with a geeky boyfriend called Steve, turned a mousy geek female friend of his into a real stunner in a few weeks. This was accomplished via makeup lessons (this bought out her fabulous cheekbones and great lips), an expensive restyling of her long straggly hair and the selection of a wardrobe that showed off her great figure and newly discovered legs to best advantage.
The result was a social disaster. Newly beautified geekess quick put herself about and drew gorgeous men to her like moths to a flame. Result was she chucked Steve’s best friend in favour of an athletic hunk with a Porsche. The geek gang therefore turned on Jane and she became persona non grata for the next few weeks. Fortunately Steve remained loyal and Jane is now back in with the geeks and all is forgiven.
Geekdom in Popular Culture
One of the best portrayals of geek culture is the US TV show, The Big Bang Theory. Watch the show if you want to get an idea what it's like for an ordinary girl hang out with and date geeks.
Penny, the female lead, is pretty, sociable and of average intelligence. She is a neighbour to four geeks who work at a university and she finds herself sharing their world and even falling for the least nerdy of the four, Leonard.
Also recommended is the Sci Fi TV show Firefly not because it is about geeks but because geeks really love it. The UK show The IT Crowd is also great fun and looks at three people who inhabit an IT department.
How to Ditch a Geek
Let’s suppose you are convinced that the relationship with your geek isn’t going to work and you need to ditch him? How can you do it without hurting his feelings?
Thats easy. just tell him you believe Star Wars is a children’s movie. Alternatively, tell him the search for the Higgs Boson via the Large Hadron Collider at CERN is a total waste of money. This kind of girly ignorance will soon wear him down and he’ll dump you. Whats a Higgs Boson? Don’t even ask!
Summary
So, If the men around you are only after you for one thing. No I don't mean your to die for curry receipe! It may be time to seriously consider dating a geek. You can start by checking out some online dating sites.
Do be prepared to meet techie guys half way but please, please avoid going totally native and attending a Sci Fi convention dressed as a Slave Girl from Star Wars!

... I consider myself a geek and don't relate with half of what you worte. Star Wars? who cares... Big Bang theory: way over the top, at best taking the most extreme cases. "Geeks can be a little smelly and unwashed" < does not deserve a response.
And why would i want you to dress up as Leia? that is not a geek, that is a weirdo with issues.
